Toxin Free DIY Personal lubricant

When we think about chemical free products we think of the basic personal care products like moisturiser, laundry powder, shower gel.

But recently I got thinking what about Personal lubricant?  I started working on a DIY personal lubricant recipe.

Personal lubricant is used to moisten a woman’s sensitive tissues, simulating for more comfortable sex.  It also enhances pleasure for both partners, creating less friction and making sex more enjoyable.

Most of the personal lubricant on the market contain synthetic and or toxic ingredients that could cause unpleasant reactions or pose health risks.

But they also contain something is not always classed as a nasty chemical Glycerine. A form of sugar, glycerin may increase incidence of candida, which can result in vaginal yeast infections in women susceptible to them.

The vagina is a place where the natural pH level and environment of our Vagina is easily affected and if natural defense mechanisms are weakened, problems such as yeast and bacterial infections can arise.

So something as simple as some friction, slight tissue damage and then  adding the sugar based lube in one night of passion had created one of those embarrassing chemist visits, a "no go zone".

While on the quest to creating something awesome to use in the bedroom I came up with a list of some of the other common toxic ingredients you are polluting yourself with during sexy time.....

Petroleum or petroleum-based ingredients

Mineral oil or petroleum distillates are Petroleum based ingredients and can be found in many lubricants most common petroleum jelly.  These ingredients can be linked as a carcinogenic, skin irritants and allergies.

Parabens. (methylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben) These synthetic preservatives, which can mimic the effects of estrogen in your tissues, may have links to higher risk of breast cancer, interfere male reproduction functions, endocrine disruption.

Phenoxyethanol. This ingredient is often used in "Natural, organic. no nasty chemical" products however according to the EWG, this chemical is moderately hazardous, with possible links to skin irritation and toxicity. High concentrations have been associated with reproductive damage, depressed immunity, and reduced nervous system function in newborns.

Siloxanes. (cyclomethicone, silicones, Polydimethylsiloxane, Dimethicone) These ingredients have been linked to endocrine disruption, fertility issues, harm to reproductive & immune system, liver damage and Uterine.

PEGs. (Propylene glycol, ethylene oxide, dioxane 1-4) These ingredients may cause some women to experience tissue irritation, can be linked to carcinogenic, system, geno toxicity and nervous system damage.

Glycerin. A form of sugar, glycerin may increase incidence of candida, which can result in vaginal yeast infections in women susceptible to them.

Chlorhexidine. Commonly found in some multipurpose lubricants, this ingredient can trigger irritation and toxic effects for some women

Pretty scary stuff right???

So what options did I discover......

NATURAL ORGANIC OILS

Last way longer than water-based lubricants however It is important to remember that oils will react and degrade latex condoms. You’ll also need to be careful not to contaminate your oil supply with water or bacteria, which can cause bacteria to grow.

ORGANIC VIRGIN COCONUT OIL**

For us chem free DIY'ers Coconut oil is a staple,  It is a magic oil that we use for everything and now you can really use it for EVERYTHING!

The phenolic compounds and fatty acids in coconut oil are lubricating and hydrating to the vaginal tissues to relieve dryness instantly. Coconut oil is antibacterial and an excellent source of antioxidant vitamin E to stimulate the natural secretion of moisture in the vaginal tissues. A great way to treat yeast infections as it contains caprylic acid. Specifically, it has been shown to be quite effective in combating Candida strains.

ORGANIC FLAXSEED OIL***

Flaxseed is derivative of the plant Linum usitatissimum, and the oil extracted from the seeds is a significant source of antioxidant omega-3 and phytoestrogens. This is great for nourishing the vaginal tissues while the oil itself acts as a natural lubricant for instant dryness relief. Flaxseed's polyunsaturated fatty acids also have anti-inflammatory abilities, which can help reduce the pain associated with dryness.  Flax seed oil is known for not having a long shelf life - so it is best stored in refrigerator.

ORGANIC AVOCADO OIL***

It’s a protein-rich moisturizing oil high in Vitamins A and E, rich in potassium, silky, smooth, and has no smell or taste and it’s completely edible.

***It is important to remember that oils will react and degrade latex condoms. You’ll also need to be careful not to contaminate your oil supply with water or bacteria, which can cause bacteria to grow.

ALOE VERA GEL***

Aloe is already known to be incredibly gentle and neutral on all skin types, so it's safe to use around your vagina.  We know that aloe is soothing which makes it a great option as a lubricant, and since it contains no oils or properties that can break down late it’s safe for use with condoms! If purchasing pure aloe be sure there is no sugar added or you could buy your own plant which is a more sustainable option.

***it is suggested to rub on the inside of your elbow first to ensure that you are not allergic to the latex in it.  Unless you already know you have a latex allergy, in which case you may want to steer clear of aloe altogether.

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN CHOOSING YOUR DIY PERSONAL LUBRICANTS

  • Not Conception-Friendly: In case you are trying to get pregnant, coconut oil as a lube – and any other lubricant – is not a good option. It tends to change your vagina’s pH level and affect the sperm’s ability to “swim” and meet its mate

  • Not Latex friendly!!  It is important to remember that oils will react and degrade latex. If you are using latex condoms or latex toys it is  best to use Aloe Vera gel or a water based lubricant.

  • Keep it clean! When DIY personal lubricant it is important to be careful not to contaminate your oil supply with water or bacteria, which can cause bacteria to grow.  Make minimal quantities and if possible use a amber bottle with disc cap to avoid cross contamination.

  • Get Creative! These solutions and oils can be used solo or you can get creative.  Below is a lubricant recipe I have tried and liked but remember this recipe is not suitable if using latex this goes for condoms & toys!!!

  • ESSENTIAL OILS??  Essential oils for me internally is a huge NO NO!!!!  The vagina is a very sensitive area, and the risks of irritation and the potential for burns and extreme discomfort you might feel as a result.

What did I choose..

I did a bit of playing and come up with the recipe below!!  I used Organic Avocado oil as my choice in oil because ....

a) it is the most affordable oil

b) has no smell

c) you can EAT it!

d) Full of awesome Vitamins.

I was super impressed and so wish we had discovered this years ago!  Yes, you might have to use a little more than normal and it is slightly runnier BUT ....... IT WORKS!! And the best part it is NOT STICKY, it leaves no sticky residue if anything your skin feels awesome!
