When it comes to changing a personal care product to chemical free toothpaste seems to be the latest craze! DIY recipes are popping up everywhere on Facebook etc.
But before you all jump on this bandwagon, how about doing some research!!
When you ask people what their concerns are with toothpaste their number one reply is "Fluoride"!!
So what is FLUORIDE?? Basically Fluoride is a reduced form of fluorine when bonded to another element. E.g. Sodium.
SODIUM FLUORIDE is a chemical that consists of a combination of positively charged sodium ions and negatively charged fluoride ions.
As I understand the main concern with Fluoride is the risk it may pose if consumed. Early symptoms of fluoride poisoning include gastrointestinal pain, nausea, vomiting, and headaches. This is why it is specified not to consume or swallow toothpaste and why there are specially formulated Children’s toothpastes available.
We live in a rural area and we solely rely on tank water which is also filtered through a sand filter to the house and then another at sink so we are Fluoride free when it comes to our water. Our extended family live in Brisbane and whenever we visit we make sure we have sufficient drinking water available, as most of Australia's water is now fluoridated.
ADA refers to Water fluoridation as the topping up of the levels of naturally occurring fluoride in the water to strengthen teeth against tooth decay. Fluorides are minerals found very commonly in the earth's crust and in all water supplies.
One thing I tell my LIFESTYLERS all the time.........Natural isn't always healthy or good!
Fluoride was a huge concern to me when my children were born and not for the reason you may think. I was extremely concerned for my munchkin’s teeth development and asked the chemist and my dentist if it was necessary for them to have fluoride tablets; I was relieved when they actually said NO!
I really take care of my teeth as does my husband and I try to encourage good oral care with my children also, not just in the brushing and flossing but also food and drink that they consume.
As I slowly removed chemicals from life I started questioning my toothpaste, so I got into it and researched the ingredients of a well-known brand of toothpaste and boy I was surprised.
All of the ingredients registered only 2 or below except for Fluoride! These were the only ingredients that rated at all:-
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate rated 1-2 on EWG Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive) and Human irritant - strong evidence (only for products for use around the eyes, on the skin, or may be aerosolized (airborne)
Sodium monofluorophosphate rated 2 on EWG Organ system toxicity
Sodium Fluoride rated 5 on EWG, High concerns multiple, additive exposure sources, irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs). Occupational hazards. Low concerns Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive).
Sodium Saccharin rated 1 on EWG; Saccharin is an artificial sweetener benzoic sulfimide!
So I then spoke with my BFF who is a dental technician and has worked in the field for over 17 years and she also explained the benefits of Fluoride in helping prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay. In children under 6 years of age, fluoride becomes incorporated into the development of permanent teeth, making it difficult for acids to demineralise the teeth. It is certainly important for infants and children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years to be exposed to fluoride. This is the timeframe during which the primary and permanent teeth come in.
So after the knowledge of my research and my BFF's expertise I came to the conclusion that for my family it was the consumption of Fluoride which was the issue for me, and that the fluoride in there toothpaste was only not recommended for use in areas where the fluoride content in the water supply is greater than 0.6 parts per million. As my children did not consume water that had Fluoride added to it that in their best oral health interests I would continue them using regular toothpaste. However I decided to give the natural option a go for myself!!
I have a family history of gum and teeth disease. Like I said earlier I take great care with my teeth. I eat a sugar free diet, I brush and floss every day, I coconut pull or oil pull, and have regular dental check-ups. I am cavity free, that's right NO fillings.
So 6 months ago I started using my natural toothpaste! I love it, my teeth feel clean for longer than ever before, my gums are beautiful, I don't get that slimy film on my teeth when I wake up in morning (biofilm or soft plaque), my breathe is super fresh! I thought.......... fantastic! Then last week I visited the dentist only to discover the devastating news.
I need a filling!!!
Not only do I need my first and only filling in my adult teeth but there are signs of demineralization of my enamel layer in between all my back molars!
I had not informed my dentist of my change in toothpaste and as he talked to me about flossing I interrupted him and said "I floss every day, could this be from changing my toothpaste?" His response "Is it Fluoride Free?"
My dentist is tremendous, and instead of giving me a "clicking of teeth" attitude he purely laid down the facts and my options suggesting if I want to continue with this toothpaste to use tooth mousse plus once a week to help with redepositing (remineralisation) to the enamel layer from the foods and waters consumed. If I start this soon it is possible for this damage to reverse.
So do your research! Take into consideration all results, history, clinical results, listen to experts, do your own experimenting, and make your decision based on your own dental and family history.
I've decided to keep using natural toothpaste however I have now created a DIY toothscrub that I named "MYfang mineralisation scrub". It contains Bentonite clay which may help with remineralisation. I use this toothscrub regularly & occasionally use the tooth mouse as well and so far have had success.
I will continue giving my children the store bought toothpaste, and continue to refrain from consuming fluoridated water. I feel the long term effect on their teeth and my pocket $$ far out way's the risk of OUR exposure to Fluoride! I am happy with MY choice! And I am super happy I researched and did my own experimenting!
My point is CHOICES are fantastic, everybody can make them, just make INFORMED ones, and choices that suit YOU!
What YOU can is enough!
