The Clean Living Clinic offers DIY ingredients, MYrecipes, DIY kits, MYClinics & Workshops and MYLifestyler support network to help empower you to live a non-toxic, back to basic, simplicity lifestyle.
However the environment and our chemical exposure is also important to us at The Clean Living Clinic!
So when it comes to packaging our ingredients and packing our orders we want to do that the most Eco friendly & low toxic way possible.
We have hopes and dreams for our products to be packed as chemical free as possible without decreasing the quality of our product and very importantly keeping it affordable, and limiting the impact on the environment.
So this is what we came up with.....
Bottles & Jars:- Where ever possible we package our products in amber glass jars and bottles, this keeps our product fresh, in the best possible quality and of course there are no plastic chemicals leaching into our ingredients. Not only can these containers be sterilised and reused if they have to be disposed of they can be recycled.
DIY kits:- are boxed in recyclable boxes that contain no glue, staples etc. We use shredded paper that is recycled from newspapers, office paper etc from our own homes and office to pack and protect our products in DIY kits. All these items are recyclable.
DIY dry ingredient:- Our DIY dry ingredients are packaged and heat sealed in food grade safe cellophane bags. Cellophane is actually made from plant cellulose cellophane that is naturally 100% compostable. Cellophane will biodegrade between 10 days-4 months. There are some nasty chemicals used in the process to make cellophane however, given the amount of processing and nasties it takes to turn petro-chemicals; i.e. chemicals derived from crude oil, into plastics and the damage those plastics do long after having been discarded, it would seem to me that cellophane is probably still better environmentally.
Packaging boxes:- When sending our orders we re-use boxes that have been sent to us or we use boxes sourced from a local company who boast planet friendly facts such as:-
Our corrugated packaging is fully biodegradable and recyclable.
Our boxes are closed using water soluble adhesive rather than metal staples – not only safer for children and inquisitive pets, but it means they are totally biodegradable without compromising strength.
Paper based packaging is 100% recyclable and close to 70% of paper and board packaging is recycled.
We only use cardboard raw material suppliers committed to recycled content that can help you save money, assist in compliance with legislation and win customer approval for environmental responsibility
BioFill:-to cushion the items while reducing the movement of the goods inside and reduce the risk of damage during transport or storage we use Bio-Fill has been manufactured from renewable resources being made of 100% natural starch making it compostable whilst being static, odor and dust free. Once water is applied to Bio-Fill it quickly breaks down. As we receive a lot of this in packages we receive we reuse it in customer orders as much as possible.
Unfortunately there are some things that are not as Eco friendly but we do our best to make it work......
Labels:- We are currently using labels on our DIY kits and paper bag packaging. Our labels are PVC this is not ideal however as most of our ingredients come in contact with moisture they needed to be waterproof.
So to limit the impact on the environment we have designed 4 blank labels that are universal to all OUR products, we HAND stamp the product information on these labels with water proof ink. This cuts down production emissions as well as excess of packaging.
We are looking at changing our paper bags to printed bags in the near future which will again decrease environmental footprint.
Dry Ingredients:- To get the freshest and best quality ingredients to you our dry ingredients must be air tight and protected from the ailments. We package our dry ingredients in paper bags that are poly lined with a Tin Tie at the top of the bag folds over and seals in freshness. But you guessed it, we are on the right track to finding an alternative to this also.
Bubble wrap:- As we use a lot of glass in our packaging, protection against breakage is important during posting. We do not buy bubble wrap however we do reuse and recycle wrap that we receive.
PET 1 Amber bottles & jars:- We obviously avoid plastic as much as possible however in some cases we cannot. As we retail some products in larger sizes such as 1 Litre, and larger jar sizes our ability to get glass in this size is very limited and even if we could the cost of postage would increase dramatically as well as the retail cost.
In these limited cases we use Plastic #1 - PET or PETE stands for polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic resin and a form of polyester. PET is commonly used to package:
The Health Concerns with this plastic are :- Studies have found levels of antimony (a toxic chemical) leaching from water bottles that have been placed in heat for prolonged times. Although PETE does not contain BPA or Phthalates. PETE plastic should not be reused because cleaning detergents and high temperatures can cause chemicals to leach out of the plastic. Plastic #1 is only intended for one time use.
So What can YOU do to help with decreasing our & your Eco footprint?
Always store your ingredients in a dry, dark, cool place.
Follow product storage instructions recommended on recipe's.
If you can store your dry ingredients in sterilised, air tight, recycled glass jars.
Always use a scoop or spoon to remove product & ingredients to avoid cross contamination and bacteria.
GLASS:- remove labels, Sterilise all glass bottles and reuse them you can even replace label or discard label and place glass in recycle bin.
BOXES & KITS:-remove & discard labels from all cardboard and place in recycle bins.
BUBBLE WRAP:- can be recycled through the same national drop-off collection program that accepts plastic bags. for example most Woolworths and Coles have allocated bins provided.
PET BOTTLE & JAR:- remove label from bottle, wash out and place in recycle bin.
BIO-FILL:-Can be composted with organic waste including food waste, depending on temperature, moisture level and micro-organisms in the compost. Simply add on the lawn or garden and water in.
CELLOPHANE:- remove labels and add to your compost!! Simply Scrunch up the cellophane to create air pockets. Layering any compostable material will lead to compaction and loss of oxygen. The microscopic organisms that break down the material need warmth, food and oxygen.
There are a number of options available for Recycling and TerraCycle is one of the best!! TerraCycle offers free recycling programs funded by brands, manufacturers, and retailers around the world to help you collect and recycle your hard-to-recycle waste. Simply choose the programs you’d like to join; start collecting in your home, school, or office; download free shipping labels; and send us your waste to be recycled. You can even earn rewards for your school or favorite non-profit!You can find your local drop off points here.
If you have any suggestions that fit our beliefs for our packaging we would love to hear from you. Contact us any time.
What YOU can is enough
