Bacteria can survive on a surface for several hours to days, while viruses can survive longer and even linger for weeks.
Yoga mats can harbour bacteria, fungi, viruses, and more. Elle conducted specimens on mats from a New York Yoga studio and sent them off to be tested for bacteria and fungi and the results were disgusting (see here)
But it is easily fixed! Simply cleaning your mat with this DIY yoga mat cleaner after and prior to practice is all you need.
DIY yoga cleaner recipe - MYyoga mist DIY MYrecipe
I have created MYyoga mist is the perfect multi-purpose accessory to your yoga bag!
What you need:-
130ml distilled water - alternatively you can use Isopropyl Alcohol which provides a antiseptic, antibacterial, anti fungal benefit (read more here)
20 drops of 100% pure essential oils - We LOVE and recommend The Clean Living Clinics MYwarrior oil in this recipe With Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Juniper Berry and Geranium. Not only does this blend provide antiseptic, anti-fungal, disinfecting, antibacterial, Geranium also helps with airborne bacteria. This blend of oils is a very grounding, strengthening, uplifting, & energising blend which calms, centers and inspires ambition. With earth and citrus tones bring out your inner warrior strength.
Simply add essential oils to vegetable glycerine and add to bottle

Shake the DIY yoga mat cleaner gently before use
Use it 3 ways..... 1. ~ Spritz through the room prior to practice to infuse the aroma and inhale essential oil benefits & properties to help relax body & mind. 2. ~ Use as a body mist!! Spray onto wrist and nape of neck. (not recommended if using alcohol) 3. ~ Spray onto Yoga mat and gently wipe to clean mat.
