I often have requests for chemical free DIY recipes and I always love experimenting to create something effective.
Recently Marnie from Toxin free tribe asked me if I had a DIY cleaning wipes recipe. So my first question was ....What do you love about cleaning wipes? Her response was.......
Of course as always the recipe also had to meet my "ASTECS" standards (you can find out more about them here)
Mainstream cleaning or disinfectant wipes contain plastic fibers, these are not biodegradable or take hundreds of years to decompose, they pollute seas and clog drains.
The chemicals contained in the wipes include:-
Phthalates used as a fragrance It is not required by law for companies to disclose what’s in their scents, so you won’t find phthalates on a label but chances are you will find the word “fragrance”. Phthalates are known endocrine disruptions, skin eye & lung irritant, ecotoxicology.
Triclosan found in a lot of products labelled “antibacterial.” This ingredient has been banned in the US for use in hand wash etc as their has been no significant evidence that it works. However here in Australia it is still being used in many products including multipurpose spray. Triclosan is an aggressive antibacterial agent that can promote the growth of drug-resistant bacteria as well as Eco system problems.
2-butoxyethanol is the key ingredient in many window cleaners and gives them their characteristic sweet smell. It belongs in the category of “glycol ethers,” a set of powerful solvents that don’t mess around. Law does not require 2-butoxyethanol to be listed on a product’s label. May cause skin, eye & lung irritant, endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity.
So what I came up with ......
To get a DIY cleaning wipes recipe that has effective antibacterial properties it requires a necessary 60% minimum to 95% maximum Ethanol or Isopropanol!! At the recommended percentages they are effective antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal agents.
For DIY cleaning wipes you will require Paper towel which is compostable however it is NOT recyclable!!! Products like paper napkins, paper towels, tissues, and anything else that might have come into contact with food, grease, or body fluids will likely destroy an entire batch of recyclable paper products because of contamination.
Choosing your paper towel for your DIY cleaning wipes will depend on YOUR priorities, you may choose:-
Heavy duty non- recycled paper towel. This type will give you more strenght trength in your DIY wipes however paper towels are also produced using a method that improves the “wet strength” of the paper. Typically water breaks up the hydrogen bonds holding together cellulose
Recycled paper towel. This is not as durable as heavy duty however if you can find the right one it can be Biodegradable, No chlorine, inks, dyes, or scents.....so reducing your chemical exposure and helping the environment being safe to compost (I like Who Gives a Crap paper towel)
MY DIY cleaning wipes
You Will Need:-
1/2 roll of paper towels
Recycled Coffee jar with plastic lid, or Recycled wipes container.
250ml distilled water
65ml Hydrogen Peroxide—disinfecting, cleaning
65ml Isopropyl Alcohol—antiseptic, antibacterial, anti fungal*
1/2 tsp vinegar
1/2 tsp Castile soap
20 drops of 100% pure essential oil—Tea Tree or MY multi blend
2% Leucidal* (natural preservative) *optional
1. Cut paper towel roll in half
2. Depending on your container, you can lie paper towel on side and remove out of container lid, or you can place cut side down.
3. In a bowl add essential oils to castile soap and gently mix to combine
4. Add the rest of ingredients and gently combine
5. Pour mixture over paper towels and allow to absorb. You may need to turn container to make sure they are soaked.
6. If you placed your roll on cut side down you can now remove cardboard roll and gently bring up paper towel from the middle of the roll.
· Remove DIY cleaning wipe from container and wipe down as usual
· Be sure to dispose of correctly!
*To increase the anti-bacterial side you can increase the Isopropyl Alcohol to 60% of the recipe.
