Feel YOUR boobs!!! The truth & facts on breast health & chemicals.

Breast health is SO important to me and it very much should be for YOU too!  There is this huge misconception breast cancer only happens to women over 40....NOT TRUE!

Breast cancer can occur in younger women. It is estimated that 841 women between the ages of 20 and 39 will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. This accounts for 4.7% of all breast cancers diagnosed in Australia.(1)

My Mother and maternal Grandmother both had breast cancer so for me early detection & prevention is key.  I am a big believer in self checks and of course prevention through breast care and avoiding certain products, ingredients etc.

Through self checking I found a lump at the age of 20, after a biopsy it was diagnosed as a benign fibroadenomas however it continued to increase in size causing me discomfort and it was removed 12 months later.  I have very lumpy breast but still  regularly doing self checks and having regular breast checks every year at the doctor and the occasional ultrasound.

Last year I discovered another lump!  Although I have lumpy breast you can most definitely tell  the difference between "regular lumpy" & "cause for concern lumpy".  

This lump was tiny it pretty much felt like a frozen pea under my boob,  a quick visit to the doctor and I was sent straight away to the Womens diagnostic centre where they immediately did a biopsy.  Again thankfully it was benign and was diagnosed as another fibroadenoma, I was recommended for 6 monthly ultrasounds to monitor size and changes.

On Monday it was a year since my initial find and I popped on over for my second follow up ultrasound.........I although I have developed two more of the little suckers I was thrilled to discover there was minimal changes and I can now go back to my regular 12 month checks.

There is so much information out there about what may cause breast cancer so lets look at the facts and what you can do for early detection and prevention!

The main factors for reducing your risk are:

  1. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and keeping active

  2. Reduce alcohol intake

  3. Quit smoking

There is actually no scientific evidence to suggest that deodorants are linked to the development of breast cancer.

What we do know though is......

Aluminum-based compounds are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds "block" or "plug"  the sweat duct, stopping the flow of sweat to the skin's surface, which in turn can limit the release of toxins within the body.  It may also  be absorbed by the skin and have estrogen-like (hormonal) effects.

Parabens, which are preservatives used in some deodorants and antiperspirants have been shown to mimic the activity of estrogen in the body’s cells. 

Although no studies to date have confirmed any substantial adverse effects of aluminum & parabens that could contribute to increased breast cancer risks, it has been reported that parabens are often found in breast tumor, and estrogen is known to promote the growth of breast cancer cells.(2)

A 2003 retrospective cohort study examining the frequency of underarm shaving and antiperspirant/deodorant use among 437 breast cancer survivors (2) reported younger age at breast cancer diagnosis for women who used antiperspirants/deodorants frequently or who started using them together with shaving at an earlier age(2)

Early detection

  • breast awareness –  FEEL YOUR BOOBS!! 

Managing your risk for breast cancer involves being aware of the signs and symptoms and monitoring changes in your body.  Awareness by a woman of the normal look and feel of her breasts is so important.  One way to do this is to regularly perform a breast self-examination.

  • clinical breast examination – Get regular breast checks with your GP!! 

  • screening  – depending on your doctor or age & history this may be done through use of mammography, ultrasound or MRI (3)

Breast health

Keep your breasts healthy with a regular massage!!  The body’s lymphatic system is highly concentrated in the underarm and chest regions, stimulating these areas helps keep this key detox mechanism running smoothly.  There is a great 101 on self-breast massage here.

I guess the point I am trying to make her is SELF CHECKS & MAKING HEALTHY CHOICES  is the key to keeping those boobies healthy!!!
